The media portrays Chicago as the most dangerous city there is. Constantly reporting on the crimes, violence, and deaths that occur. There is always a constant disagreement on news networks about who is to blame for the serious increase of gun violence in Chicago. Fox News released a clip in December of 2016 precisely talking about the violence in Chicago.
The video shows how Chicago issue is portrayed throughout the news outlets and the disagreement on who to blame. The media focuses more on the blame then how to help the community in need. Another example showing the way Chicago’s violence in portrayed the way is the way President Trump views it. Insisting Chicago is at the point where the Federal Government needs to get involved. He also puts the blame towards the racial issues on minorities.
Although partly true, the issues that are not brought to light which also play a significant role is the way law enforcement is acting on the situation, by falling back and the injustice they receive when the cities officers act in an inhumane way and get away with their acts. The media’s big issue regarding the violence increase in Chicago is the overflow of weapons. Max Ehrenfreund states, “When Donald Trump talks about the Second Amendment on the campaign trail, he often mentions Chicago as evidence of the futility of gun control.” Chicago does have some strict gun control laws, yet not all the laws are always fully enforced. This shows to have an impact regarding violence because the ability to get a gun on the streets is still relatively easy. Ehrenfreund also mentions, “A firearm can turn a disagreement or an argument into something much more dangerous, converting what might have otherwise been a fistfight into a killing”. Which is true in regards to gang rivalry and fighting for their division of what they call their turf. Most encounters often lead to a shooting incident or a tragic homicide. Increasing the chances of an innocent child being hurt or left without a dependable family figure.
